Meet Donyelle

Meet Donyelle 1200 800 habitatdetroit

As an employee of Detroit Public Schools in Michigan for 36 years, Donyelle understands the importance of education. She has worked tirelessly to instill a desire for learning in each of her five children, but working a full-time job while being a widowed mother left little time for Donyelle to pursue her own higher education. To support her two girls and three boys, she dropped out of community college.

Finding a decent, affordable place to call home was an ongoing challenge. Donyelle and her children were priced out of a townhome when the rent started increasing every three months. In search of affordable housing, the family moved across town, but their two-bedroom rental was small and had mice. “We were really in need of better housing,” Donyelle says.

Pushing off going back to school, Donyelle feared that she’d fail to leave anything behind for her children.

A friend introduced Donyelle to Habitat for Humanity Detroit, and she was soon building her house alongside her future neighbors in Morningside. She relished the time building her dream home — and building lasting friendships that would root her in her new neighborhood on Detroit’s east side.

Donyelle and her three boys — her two oldest daughters had already left home — moved into their Habitat house in June 2009. She said she felt “pure bliss” walking through her door for the first time.

In August 2022, three months after her youngest son, Chance, graduated from Michigan State University, Donyelle returned to school, earning her associate’s degree in general studies from a local community college.

Donyelle says homeownership was a catalyst for finishing her degree. “I wouldn’t have completed my education if I was not a homeowner,” she says. “I really feel that me being a homeowner, me being stable, me having a foundation was the basis for me being able to go back and complete my education and get my degree.”

Achieving homeownership, navigating a financial crisis that was particularly devastating for Detroit, returning to college — all three speak to Donyelle’s resilience, and she says these lessons have not been lost on her children.

“I think that it’s important that my children know that I’ve worked very hard all my life. To have a stable job, to have a stable home, it means a lot. It can take you far. It can give you advantages.”

Donyelle has remarried, and her husband has three children of his own. The couple love hosting their big, blended family. Donyelle, who calls herself a “fun grandmother,” finds unmatched pleasure in watching her six grandchildren play in her living room. It’s even sweeter knowing that she will be able to pass down the home that has been their key to a more secure future.

Donyelle says her home has provided the family with “a sense of pride and belonging.” Even as her children have grown up and built homes and families of their own, they know that the doors of their mother’s two-story Habitat house — where the words “Practice Kindness” adorn the front porch — will always be open.

“It’s a place where, no matter where they go in the world, they know they could always come home,” Donyelle says.

Habitat for Humanity Detroit Celebrates in Morningside

Habitat for Humanity Detroit Celebrates in Morningside 1547 1031 habitatdetroit

The threat of rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of those who gathered together on Saturday, April 22, on Maryland Street to celebrate Habitat for Humanity’s Home is the Key Campaign. Habitat Detroit was chosen for this national campaign which raises funds and drives awareness around the growing need for affordable housing all across the United States. Thanks to generous sponsors including At Home, Kum and Go, Resideo, and iHeart Media, the campaign spurs homebuilding and repair efforts and helps residents in communities like Morningside access the undeniable advantages of homeownership. It also reminds us that when homeownership is accessible to everyone, we all benefit. Several of our very own Morningside neighbors were featured in this campaign and a spotlight was shone on the work being done by the Detroit affiliate.

National partners, Habitat for Humanity International staff, local volunteers, and the Habitat Detroit team came together to celebrate months of work. Special guest, Egypt Sherrod, of HGTV, was on hand for a ceremonial wall raising at Habitat’s newest build site.  Volunteers spread out along the block to put their talents to use on a house being rehabbed by Habitat, along with helping our neighbors with other light landscaping and exterior work to freshen up the entire street. After hours of hard work guests and neighbors gathered together to enjoy food, fun, and festivities at a block party to celebrate all of the amazing work being done in the Morningside neighborhood.

Just days later Habitat Detroit hosted a Home Dedication for the newest Habitat home, a beautifully restored house on Haverhill.  Joining the more than 130 homes built or rehabbed by Habitat Detroit in Morningside, this house was a labor of love.  The Habitat team and countless volunteers worked tirelessly to breathe new life into the house as it was prepared to welcome the Flores family to their very own home sweet home.

The Flores family was surrounded by family, friends, neighbors, and community leaders as they were officially welcomed to the community.  Excitement was in the air and the sun was shining as Gabby, Miguel, Jada, and Gracie (along with pup Phoebe) laughed, cried, and showed off their beautiful new space.

Since partnering with Habitat Detroit in May 2022, the entire Flores family has taken an active partnering role, from building sweat equity hours as volunteers at builds, attending events and classes, and working diligently to increase their buying power.

Upon viewing the house on Haverhill, we could see the joyful tears in their eyes as Gabby pointed out where she would put her plants, which room her girls would have, and how she would hang Christmas stockings along the fireplace mantel.

Both of these events are shining examples of the continued work Habitat Detroit has been doing in Morningside for the past 15 years.  Habitat Detroit is so thankful for the outstanding partnership with the neighborhood and is excited to continue our dedicated efforts to help build homes and hope for our community.

Rocket CommUNITY Day

Rocket CommUNITY Day 1200 800 habitatdetroit

Rocket Volunteers Take Community Garden to New Heights!

Thanks to the 35 Rocket Community Fund volunteers who helped make improvements to an incredible community garden in the Morningside neighborhood. The garden, owned by Emerald Isles Community Development Corp., had a great start and the Rocket volunteers were able to make it even better, despite a pretty hot day of outdoor work!

Improvements to the garden that day included mulching the walkways, constructing new raised garden beds and benches, assembly of a compost bin and water catch system, and installation of a fence. All in all, these improvements will make this community garden a great place for neighbors to come together, grow, learn, connect, and thrive.

Habitat for Humanity Detroit works with amazing volunteers like these on projects under our CommUnity Impact umbrella. Many only know us for the dozens of new homes we build, but we also strive to make additional impact in the community through neighborhood revitalization projects. Like this garden project with Rocket Community Fund, we partner with local companies and organizations to spend a day improving an aspect of a neighborhood to create a better sense of community and home.

“When we are able to go beyond fixing a single house but truly impact the entire community – through new builds, rehabs, CHRs, and CommUNITY impact projects – we create better spaces for all of our neighbors,” said Mary Ellen Kearney, Director of Philanthropy for Habitat Detroit.

Thank you, Rocket Community Fund, for making Morningside a greener and happier place to live!
