Thirty-five interns at Barton Malow recently gathered to lay new driveways, sidewalks, and a back porch for homeowners in Detroit. The company worked with Habitat for Humanity Detroit (HFHD) on the project and donated the materials and time to make the improvements happen.

The work took place at homes located on Maryland Ave. in Detroit. One home is an existing site that HFHD has been making improvements to recently. That home received a new driveway and front walk. Another project the interns tackled was at a newly built home by HFHD, which now has a driveway, front walk, and back porch landing. Barton Malow interns also aided with wall prep and siding installation at the homes.

The learning experience, which included hands-on training to lay concrete forms and pour concrete, is the latest in the partnership between HFHD and Barton Malow. The company made a generous donation to HFHD earlier this year to further support HFHD’s mission of providing affordable, safe, and quality homes in the City of Detroit.

Ross Schoenherr started his roofing company in 1995, with a passion to help others.

For the last several years, he’s been doing just that, sending out a roofing crew several times a year to provide free replacement roofs for those in need.

Romeo-based Schoenherr was in Dearborn Heights Aug. 23 to do a complete tear off, and then re-roof a house for a local veteran.

The veteran declined to be included in any news coverage.

Home is the Key Recap

Home is the Key Recap 600 400 habitatdetroit

During the month of April, a sense of excitement filled the air as word of Habitat Detroit’s “Home is the Key” campaign spread across the city. Each week, the generosity of our donors, sponsors, and volunteers contributed to the perfect blend of hope and community that led us straight into the campaign’s grand finale on April 22nd: A memorable Home is the Key block party event!

On this fun-filled day, we combined forces with our sponsors and volunteers to tackle various homeowner projects right in our community. From renovating properties, to building foundational walls for a new home, to fostering abundance in a local community garden, we were certainly not short of opportunities to make a difference while showing the world the amount of power a home can have—for those in it, and far beyond.

The joy that was felt between homeowners and volunteers on this day was certainly a cause for celebration, so we topped off the event with live music, carnival games, food trucks, and more family-friendly activities for our homeowners, volunteers, and sponsors to enjoy. Having the ability to build and rehabilitate these properties was a gift to all who came to participate, and everyone present was able to learn of a home’s ability to close the wealth gap, provide safety and stability for families, and create prosperous futures for communities at large.

“It is powerful to see what can be accomplished when people come together,” said Stephanie Osterland, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Detroit. “Local businesses, community partners and neighbors rallied behind this community’s transformation and made it happen. For the individuals and families who call Morningside home, the significance of that effort is immeasurable.”

We are so grateful for all who came out to participate and celebrate our Home is the Key campaign. Habitat Detroit’s efforts would not be possible without your support, and your life-changing service and generosity fueled our celebrations at the block party and beyond. With you, the future is bright!

Meet Larry & Regina

Meet Larry & Regina 1200 800 habitatdetroit

On any given day, it’s common for four generations of Larry and Regina’s family to drop into their home in the Morningside neighborhood of Detroit to share a meal, a story, a laugh. The couple, who married later in life, enjoy a large, blended family. After living in their community for nearly a decade, Larry and Regina have found that their neighbors have also become like family, too.

Their front door, which Larry jokingly calls “a magnet,” is a constant carousel of friends, family and neighbors stopping by. Regina loves their open-door policy, especially when it means spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Before Larry and Regina moved into their “blessed home,” Regina lived alone in a bungalow with severe structural damage that would have required expensive renovations to the house’s foundation, roof and walls. The house also lacked proper insulation, making wintertime in Detroit unbearable.

After realizing they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together, Regina and Larry decided to explore housing upgrades. Their search led them to Habitat for Humanity Detroit and the Morningside neighborhood. The couple was approved for Habitat’s homeownership program and immediately began volunteering and rooting themselves in their new community. Larry and Regina marveled at the generosity and kindness of their neighbors during each home build.

“What Habitat did for me was remind me of what camaraderie is and what community is really about,” Regina says. “Habitat is a very important piece of togetherness.”

“Our grandchildren know they have a place to come home. Before, everything seemed so temporary. The foundation we laid here helps my family be more stable.”

Larry and Regina adore their four-bedroom home and spacious backyard, which has been the site of many impromptu neighborhood parties, family reunions and Fourth of July celebrations. Most importantly, the ample space allows their four grandchildren – 16-year-old Xavier, 12-year-old Erin, 3-year-old Ja’Koi and 5-month-old Imunique – to comfortably stay with them.

“Our grandchildren know they have a place to come home,” Regina says. “Before, everything seemed so temporary. The foundation we laid here helps my family be more stable.”

“Homeownership gives us power”

Larry and Regina, both military veterans, have become community fixtures in Morningside, setting a standard in the ways they care for their family and neighbors. Homeownership has enabled the couple to invest in their home and community. Their next project is to install a playground set in their backyard for their grandchildren to enjoy — a move that’s sure to attract other kids from the neighborhood as well.

“Homeownership gives us power,” Larry says. “You can use your home to make things happen. Home is the key to success.”
