Critical Home Repair FAQs

Program Eligibility

The CHR program is in high demand and we are currently processing a group of applications. When those clients have been served we will re-open the application process. Please check back in 30 days. You can also follow us on social media for updates.

Yes, you must own your home AND live in the home.

Income requirements are based on the Area Median Income (AMI) for Wayne County. Eligibility requires that household income falls below 80% of the AMI. Income guidelines can be found here.

The CHR program prioritizes health and safety repairs that are eligible for grant funding. Many homes have more repairs than we can address with this program alone. There are other agencies in the community that offer home repair services. Click here to visit our resources page for more information about additional services.

Applicants are more than welcome to re-apply if they previously were not eligible for the program and feel they would now be able to qualify! Please start with the initial step on completing the online intake form so we have your most up-to-date information for processing.

Home Repair Process

We do our best to complete repairs as quickly as possible. Many repairs require professional contractors and trades so timing will also depend on their availability.

The CHR program is designed to help low-income homeowners that are unable to pay for the repairs on their own or have the funds to repay a loan. We work with multiple grant sources to cover as much of the project costs as possible.

Sweat Equity is hands-on time that homeowners put in to contribute to the project and overall program. Sweat equity builds a homeowners community through partnership with the Habitat team and volunteers, as well as a sense of pride and the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills surrounding home maintenance. Accommodations are available for those that may be unable to physically participate.

The total of sweat equity hours required will be determined based on the specific project. Sweat equity hours are required by each household that will receive home repairs, and unwillingness to participate is means for disqualification from the program.
