Habitat for Humanity Detroit is proud to announce the launch of the Pope Leo Village. This new, multi-year initiative is sponsored and inspired by an anonymous donor committed to Pope Leo’s vision and commitment to serving others. In partnership with this donor, Habitat Detroit aims to transform a neighborhood on Detroit’s west side. Habitat Detroit has secured 14 buildable lots with the goal of constructing 12-14 new homes. The project will be completed in phases, with an anticipated start in spring of 2026 and completion by spring of 2029.
Building on over 35 years of successful service in Wayne County, we are thrilled to expand our mission to the west side of Detroit. While we remain committed to our ongoing work in Morningside, this expansion allows us to bring the dream of homeownership and vital community investment to even more Detroit families.
In celebration of his election, Pope Leo XIV addressed the young people of Chicago, saying, “In that service to others we may find that coming together in friendship, building up community, we too can find true meaning in our lives.” Inspired by Pope Leo’s call to action for young people, a key goal of the Pope Leo Village is to actively invite and engage young people in service. We hope to cultivate a new generation of dedicated volunteers and community leaders who will sustain this important mission.
While the Pope Leo Village Campaign is intentionally focused on strengthening ties with the Catholic community, Habitat Detroit is open to volunteers, supporters, and partners of all faiths and traditions. Every initiative and volunteer opportunity at Habitat Detroit is an invitation for people of all backgrounds—secular and spiritual alike—to stand together and build a better future. The unique skills, perspective, and generosity of all of our neighbors are valued and essential to our work.
Habitat for Humanity Detroit CEO, Stephanie Osterland, stated “This is a truly transformative moment for Detroit. The Pope Leo Village initiative allows us to deepen our commitment to sustainable homeownership right here in this vibrant neighborhood. We are absolutely thrilled to take on this endeavor, working hand-in-hand with residents and partners to build not just homes, but a foundation for the community’s future.”
Habitat for Humanity Detroit’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Our mission is to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope. Anyone inspired by Pope Leo’s commitment to service to others is encouraged to volunteer at a Build Day, fundraise amongst peers, and/or become a Habitat Detroit donor.
