Jimmy Carter Work Project Brings 30 New Homes to Southwest Detroit

Jimmy Carter Work Project Brings 30 New Homes to Southwest Detroit 1200 800 habitatdetroit

After nearly two years of planning and preparation, the 2005 Jimmy Carter Work Project (JCWP) is complete after a whirlwind week, bringing 30 new homes to Southwest Detroit.

Beginning June 19 and wrapping up June 24, the JCWP brought together an incredible 1,500 volunteers to make the project a success. President Carter and his wife, Rossalyn, along with Governor Granholm, Mayor Kilpatrick, and many others stopped by the project to lend a helping hand and show support for the project.

Each year, the Carters and Habitat for Humanity International choose a city to complete the namesake work project. Recent host locations include South Africa, Mexico, and Alabama. In 2003, the locations of the 2005 JCWP were announced, bringing attention and much-needed affordable housing to two communities in Michigan: Southwest Detroit and Benton Harbor.

Hosting such an event brings increased awareness to the needs of Detroiters, and Habitat Detroit is optimisic that it will inspire those in the greater community to volunteer, donate, and take part in making Detroit a better place to live for all.
