Hard Work and Dedication Make Local Mother of Three a Homeowner

Hard Work and Dedication Make Local Mother of Three a Homeowner 1200 800 habitatdetroit

Raising kids is anything but easy. Add in the stress of housing instability, high rent, and frequent moves to the equation and it makes the joys of parenthood even harder to enjoy. Thanks to her commitment to becoming a homeowner and enrollment in Habitat Detroit’s Homeownership Program, Latasha Caldwell and her three children now have a house to call home. The family will mark the milestone of becoming homeowners with a home dedication ceremony thrown by Habitat Detroit on March 13

“Becoming a homeowner is significant to me since it will offer my family and me comfort, security, and stability,” noted homeowner Latasha Caldwell, mother of three kids ages 18, 12, and 2. “We are incredibly grateful to all of our supporters who are helping us realize this dream.”

The Caldwells are the third family to become homeowners through Habitat Detroit this year. Join the family, Habitat staff, and volunteers to celebrate the new homeowners:

March 13 at 4pm
Lincoln Park, MI 48146

Homeownership through Habitat Detroit is a multi-year process that takes a lot of dedication and hard work on the homeowner’s part. Attending financial counseling, homeowner classes, and putting sweat equity into building the home represent some of the steps along the way to becoming official homeowners.

Meet the Rodriguez Family

A month after her home dedication, Pernella Rodriguez is thankful. What was once considered a pipe dream has become reality. Through hard work on her end, along with the support of Habitat Detroit volunteers and staff, Pernella is now a first-time homeowner!

Pernella shared: “I want to stand next to those who helped make this dream more than just a fantasy, more than just a wish, and the realization that it is possible to obtain. I want to grasp the safety, security, and a sense of belonging in my neighborhood and community.”

During her homeownership journey, Pernella often looked to others further along in the process for inspiration. But with her successful home closing last month, the tables have turned and she’s now the one inspiring others! To Pernella and the whole Rodriguez family, welcome home!

Meet the Flores Family

Meet the Flores Family 1200 800 habitatdetroit

For many children in Detroit, the idea of a safe and secure home is a foreign concept. This was true for Gabby Flores, who moved around a lot during her own childhood. While she faced many challenges in this experience, never having a “family home” also instilled dreams in her of planting her roots and finding financial stability so that she could be the best mom possible for her own young girls.

Gabby took it upon herself to make these dreams a reality. While keeping her eyes on the prize of attaining financial stability, she was able to work her way up to management roles in her professional life. Next, she set her sights on homeownership, and found hope in Habitat Detroit.

Since joining our program in 2022, the entire Flores family have been active participants in our programming: They were always eager and willing to build up sweat equity hours at volunteer builds, participate in events and classes, and develop their own buying power. In just a short time, Gabby was standing in front of their new home with tears in her eyes, imagining where she would put her plants, which rooms her girls would stay in, and how they would continue to build a beautiful and fruitful life in a place they could call their own.

“Habitat Detroit has changed my life by helping me become a homeowner and allowing me to play a role in the homeownership journey for other Habitat families,” says Flores. “Most importantly my daughters see that with hard work and dedication they too can become homeowners.”
